Hey man, any chance we could get dimensions on that box (grow and bloom)? I'm about to start a new grow and after seeing this thread elsewhere I have become inspired to steal.. err, immitate your design :) And I have to ask, are you using 5 lights or 10? I saw in one post you said ten but in a pic from another thread I only saw 5? Maybe that was an earlier build?
Nice grow btw.. having to switch from a 400w HPS to CFL this grow I was concerned I'd end up with very little. Now I know that with proper care and guidance from good people, like yourself, that I can come close to if not surpass my previous adventures.

have you ever thought of using 2 gallon grow bags? they're only about 25 cent a pop and allow much more root growth than your method. healthy roots make for a healthy plant, let those guys explore a little! also, the stretching takes away from bud production, you should look into getting the lights closer with the aid of a fan blowing over them constantly to keep the temps down. looking good, there's nothing better than growing some ganj.

The size of the "Plantlets" is controled by restricting the root mass....this is a Tested Method.
Any larger container and the clones are all different sizes.
My Method allows me to grow 10-12 different strains in the same SOG
It also allows someone to run a Perpetual Harvest System (Harvesting fresh smoke every week) in as little as 2 sq ft...:cool3:

lookin awesome! I'm going to hopefully start microgrowing soon and I had a few questions.
what spectrum lights are you using for veg and flower?
if you control plant size with the pot size how do you decide how long to veg and flower?
5.4ft^2 boxes? do you know what the volume of one is? I'm trying to figure out a good watts/ft^3 ratio.

hey doc, i was wonderin, whats the max amount of light you'd put over 2 square feet? 2'x1'x18"
greenhouse_jim
12-11-2008, 07:59 AM
Thanks for the info doc. I'm planning to build my box next week. Looking at a 3x2 footprint.. thinking 30" tall.. also thinking 9 bulbs (5 across the back, 2 on each side), most likely 42w each.. Think that will work or is that too little light for that size? I can go smaller but really don't want to get any more than 9 or 10 lights. Also, do you raise your plants at all to get them closer to the lights? I've read that they need to be close to be real effective but it appears you are not going that route. Was wondering if I need to worry with building a movable light system or if it would be fine just putting them in place and letting the plants do their thing. I'm going to be running some Snow White and Northern Bright (first time with these strains) and guess I'll probably have to go through a couple of grows to get it all figured out just right..
btw, I realize you get a lot of questions and just wanted to say I (we) appreciate the time you take out of your day to answer and provide usefull information!

Your method is somthing I will aspire to
on my first grow ever started before I saw the light, been gaining lots of info, the main thing is to throw the high wattage/cost rulebook out the window and open the mind to other methods
My first grow has already produced my first mother through cloning and she and her sporn will be the basis for my "drbud" style grow

Dr. Bud is awesome no doubt. I really would like to know his thoughts on Scrog as well. If he were to do a scrog, would the yield be that much different?
The reason I ask is because SOG and Scrog are probably the most popular techniques for micro growers with CFL.

My soil mix is Perlite,Vermiculite,Chicken Compost, local peat....from a Bog about 10 miles away, and good ol' worm poo. They are fed 4-droppers full of Schultz 10-15-10 ,1 Tbsp. Fish Emultion, and 4 drops SuperThrive per Gallon of water everytime I water
are you doing 12/12 from the beginning with clones?

Hey this is one of my first posts in this section and I'm interested in starting my own micro grow!
After looking around I really like what Dr.Bud's has going on and I was wondering what the dimensions of your grow box were? I'm confused about the height of the box because from what i gathered the plant about doubles in height during it's flowering phase?
Thanks for any help! If anyone has any good resource links I would love to learn about them!

If you look @ my plantlets...they way more than double in Height
This method is "Zero-Veg-SOG"
each strain is flowered @ 1",2",3",4" and 6" to determine "Start height" for that strain.
Once we have that info it is used to determine @ what height that strains cuts go into flowering
trying to "Set-up" a small grow?
an old kitchen Cab from a "Recycler" is a good start

sorry for such a lag in reply. thanks for the advice!
so by finding the flowering height you are just finding the ideal height at which to flower the strain to optimize it?
Also I've noticed that your plants are growing as one major cola with bud sites up the entire stalk instead of branching out. are you using a technique to produce this or is this just natural growth?
thanks for all the help again. I'm trying to study all the info i can before i jump in. and i just saw you in the chat room but i was having some computer problems and it wouldn't let me accept it.

hi drbud.. i've got to say i've read alot about your stuff around on the messageboards, and it has convinced me to say good riddance to my hps with all its implications and go for a CFL perpetual SOG grow.. i don't need to grow huge plants, and i certaintly don't need the problems with heat/ventilation and so on:)
what i was wondering, wouldn't it be easier to control the heights of the plants if i mount the light bulbs at different levels of height in the cabinet? i've seen you have all your lights at the same height in the cabinet pictures you've shown at, for example, icmag...
i've seen you've proximated the height of the clones at induced flowering to the height of the light bulbs, which you have explained will take some time. but do you put something under the bottles when they are small (2-3") so they get closer to the bulbs, or do you keep a little distance from the bulbs to the plants when they are at this stage in order to make them stretch...
just having a little trouble wrapping my head around to the whole light proximity/stretch thing... hope to hear from you, or anyone who is master of the art, for that matter... any help would be highly appreciated:)
and, since this is my first post, hello to everyone... greetings from norway:)

i live in a small one-room appartment. It is not very practical for me to have a huge lamp hanging around in my appartment, lighting/heating up the place. I do not have enough cooling capacity to mount the HPS inside a cabinet, so i have the plants in a cabinet with a class roof and the lamp hanging over....
the 600W is overkill for my space, and i would rather just like to grow some personal stash inside of a small cabinet.
the way i see it, this would give me more control on the environment for the plants (temp./hum.), and also more security and a more livable appartment....
i don't care if my yield gets smaller, i just want to grow a little bud to smoke now and then anyways....

Hey Doc
First off i want to thank you for inspiring me. I stumbled across your threads on GC and IC in January and have since built myself a sweet setup basically mimicking your old grow, without the batteries :)
Not gonna lie, I'm having a lot of fun with my new hobby and again I have you to thank for it.
I was pleased today to find your post on IC directing peeps to this new forum. The daily growth photo compilation in this thread is awesome!
I started from seeds and put 16 bottles in my flowering cabinet to kill time waiting for my mothers to grow. It's been 33 days and my plants are just a fraction of the height your babies are at this time... maybe 1/10th. They are definitely healthy looking and even have nice buds starting but they are just super compact. Unlucky that I don't know a safe server to post some photo's to show you.
My guess is keeping the plants consistently within 2-4cm's of the CFL lights is not ideal. Clearly they need to stretch a lot in order for your system to work.
My question to you is: What is the ideal distance from CFL light to promote that kind of vertical growth?
Thanks ahead of time dude. You are the man!

They are on their 2nd set of leaves some starting the 3rd set. the first set of leaves are stating to loose color and yellow. I just feed with half strength miracle grow all purpose 1/4 teaspoon with superthrive. Do you think that would be enough for them to feed and gain their color back. I'm doing a micro from seed and trying to make sure they are healthy before I flip to flower in 4 days.
