View Full Version : YBG's Hash Experiments

Being as this is a site dedicated to hash, I thot I'd do something novel, break away from reading all the glass posts, and actually make a post about hash. Lol.

I've done dry runs, wet runs, various strains, mixed and seperate, trim, bud... even veg trim hash.... The only thing I could say for certain was that the fresh material made stickier (and meltier) hash. I decided to do a bit of an experiment, and photo document the whole thing so maybe someone else here could benefit from my learning. Here is the plan so far:

I have 2 strains in this experiment; Sister M and Random Yukon Kush(ishness, kush-like anyway). I will take the same amount of each weighed fresh, divide into 2 equal portions, and freeze it all for 2 weeks minimum in a deep freeze (not a popsicle-mushy fridge freezer), process it the same way, and compare the results, along with photos for all of you to follow along on my experiments.

Now I'm going to do my best to do and show everything exactly the same way, but lets face it, I'm a stoner, lol.

The plan (as concieved in early November) is to do 4 batches of hash, with 2 mixes each (6 min then 15 min)

So thats the basic idea, lets begin shall we?

I trimmed up all the RYK, saved the top choicest buds for smoke, and saved the trim (for later runs) and a bowl of buds for this experiment.

Started out with 2 equal piles of wet weight, 1 straight to the freezer, 1 to dry first then to the freezer. Thats the drying pile in the cardboard.

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/HalfToDry.jpg

I know everyone is going to ask 'what weight?'... my best stoner recollection is 132g wet weight in each pile, dried half ended up um... 48g? ish? lol

Here is a bag of frozen dry buds, going in for a 6 minute mix, nice and foamy.

Draining the 6 minute mix, and then I took photos of the bags as I pulled them (missed the 45 pic, stoner), so it's 220, 190, 160, 120,90,73,25 in the pics. Sorry for the last crappy photo, but you can get an idea of whats there.

First pic: Dry material, 6 minute mix patties
Second pic: Dry material, short and long mix run patties

At this point, I was suprised (unexpected shocking suprise) that the first run returns were larger than the second runs', so before I chopped up the patties, I swapped the larger first run ones to the bottom section of the cardboard which had the larger squares. Sorry for the stoner confusion..... Puff puff pass....

Third pic: Chopped up patties, with the first run on the bottom section of the cardboard

So the hash dried for 3 or 4 days at this point. The pictures with the numbers at the top are the 15 minute run. The pictures with the numbers at the bottom are the first 6 minute run. I give the 25u away, so I just mixed it as you can see.

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/Dry1st73u45u.jpg

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/25uFirstSecondMixedDry.jpg

I did weigh this batch (but not the next, you'll see why later), here are the results:

I dont smoke the 190u and 160u, and sometimes not the 120u (I save it for cooking or whatnot)....

first run 190u + 160u and second run 190u,160u,and 120u totaled 0.8g
First run 120u = 0.8g
First run 90u = 1.4g
First run 73u = 2.6g
First run 45u = 1.1g
Second run 90u = 0.3g
Second run 73u = 0.6g
Second run 45u = 0.8g
First run & Second run 25u combined totaled 0.3g

Total yield = 0.8g of 'cooking' hash
0.3g of 'give away' hash
6.5g of smokeable hash, first run 120u was only ok, rest was quite good.

So 7.6g recovered (I may possibly have had a miniscule tester pinch or 2 before it was dry ;) )

Wow, what a lot of work, organizing and editing the photos and getting the post together... I have been at this most of the day. Good thing I didn't have to make the hash today too. I will continue the experiment post tomorrow with the RYK run of the fresh material... also very suprising to me..... I don't want to give the suprise away though, so you'll have to come on back to see for yourself. :)

Hope you all enjoy the thread so far,

Ok, so the process is the same, the original wet weight is the same, of exactly the same bud as batch #1.

A bin full of frozen bud, frozen bud in the bubblenow bag about to be iced, run it for a 6 minute mix.

YukonBikerGuy

Ok, so the rip(s) were really good, and its basicly the same, so I took fewer pictures for this batch.

First is a pic of the thick oily looking foam from the 6 minute mix:
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/FreshFoamyMixing.jpg

The 160u was the first bag after the 220u bag with anything in it, and it was tiny:
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/FreshFirst160u.jpg

then the 120u, 90u, 73u, and 45u, flaked on the 25u pic (just wanted to get back to my RooR)

Skipped the bag pics on the second batch, lets get straight to the hash.....

So here are the first run patties:
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/FreshFirstRunPatties.jpg

You can see much more foam from the 15 minute mix:
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/FreshFoamy2ndMixing.jpg

Here are the first and second run patties:
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/FreshFirstsecondRun-Patties.jpg

And here they are chopped up wet (so sticky):
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/FreshPattiesChopped.jpg

Now where did I put those other pictures?.... brb with some more......

Ok, Stoner guy found and edited some more pics for the post.

Here is the hash after drying for about a day:

You may have noticed that the cardboard is stained somewhat, a first for me:

Burning some of the 73u first run hash after 1 day drying (told ya some was missing):

Look at that! Full Melt Baby! I am so stoked at this point, (and getting pleasantly stoned)

Time to try some of the dry 90u first run hash:
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/90uFMCD.jpg
Holy cow man, this stuff has been drying for 4 days now, and its so sticky and gooey that if I hadn't made this hash myself I'd have sworn it was budder (sorry for the bad word Bman and fmb)... apply flame....
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/90uFMCDmelted.jpg
WoooHooo!!!!! This hash melts into a puddle and makes smokey lil bubbles even on my dirty ol screen! ( I think those are dome-ish, closest for me anyway) So potent and yummy, arrrgghhhhhhh........ sorry droolin......

This is the best hash I have ever made, and better by far than anything I sampled at the cup, perhaps ever (so far). Even after 4 more days the small amount left was still greasy and sticky..... Yum!

YukonBikerGuy
01-03-2009, 01:19 AM
No weights at the end this time sorry, it was too sticky to get near a scale, and I kept sampling it, so the weight would have been meaningless, but you can clearly see from the pictures that the end yield from the dry run was more volume, but I got FMCD hash (yes I got some un-pictured domes later) from the fresh material.

Some new things for me:
1) I had to freeze the patties a bit b4 I could chop them up at all they were so sticky
2) The stained cardboard

The 2 could be related. In talking with Bubbleman about it, it's possible that I broke some of the trich heads open chopping/shaving up the frozen patties, resulting in the staining, and the hash staying sticky (I'm more used to a dryer powdered hash).

3) YAY MELTY GOODNESS!!! I used to think it was a myth, now I'm chasin that dragon man.....

This hash is worthy of being the first bowl in my new Treating Yourself edition RooR I picked up in Amsterdam:

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/TY_RooRfirstbowlDome.jpg

Part 3 & 4 yet to come, Sister M hash, same process, lot more material..... after I make the hash, soon come :)

The point? Didn't I mention that?... Such a stoner. Basicly I wanted to see the differences for myself between dry and fresh material made into hash, starting with the exact same amount of the exact same bud, done by the exact same process. It seems a bit better than " it seems a bit stickier, and I think I got less". I'm taking all of you along with me in hopes that this information is useful to someone else besides myself. Or at least interesting. Or at least some ok pictures to look at.... I dunno, what were we talking about?

Lets all make hash :)

YukonBikerGuy

Just for the record, of the 2 batches, I prefered the hash from the fresh frozen buds better, even tho there was less of it. Way meltier (like FMCD, yay), and more potent too. The first batch hash from dry frozen buds was also nicer than most of the hashes I smoked in 'Dam, melts and bubbles and a nice stone, with a little ash left. For me this is pretty standard hash from A+ material, which is why I didnt snap pics of it as I smoked it all up :) Not as impressive images as the super melty hash, you see :)

Bump....

So today I made batch #3 for this post, from dry Sister M buds, deep frozen for 6 weeks now..... I have taken the pics and will start the editing now, but I wont post the batch untill its all dry, 3-4 days.....

Keep your eye on this space.... :passit:

YukonBikerGuy
01-10-2009, 05:13 PM
Time to post the 3rd batch. Pretty much the same as the others, except for with the Sister M I reserved a lot more bud for hashmaking, I think each starting pile of bud was 382g wet weight, 1 pile dierctly to the freezer, 1 pile dried bone dry and then into the freezer. This material sat in the deep freeze (not a mushy-popsicle fridge freezer) for about 6 weeks (minimum requirement for this experiment is 2 weeks deep frozen).

Trimming up the pile of Sister M:
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/TrimmingSisterM.jpg

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/TrimmingSisterM2.jpg
Again I kept the cream of the crop, approx the top 1/3 for nice bud to smoke, and the rest went into the hash piles.

It was -35C outside when I made this batch, so I thought I'd take advantage of it and pre-chill the bucket and bags out on the deck:

So remember how I thought it would be good to chill the bags and bucket to -35C? Well when i went to pull the bags, I found that there were actually ice crystals forming between the bags. Now thats a cold mix! Maybe too cold? Got some ice in the hash as I pulled the bags, but it melted out ok on the pressing screen.

YukonBikerGuy

So I managed to not 'test' very much of this till it was dry, and took weights.

Both runs 190u went straight into the cooking pile, no weights.
Second run 160u, First and Second run 25u (to give away) = 1.0g

The rest of the hash is quite smokeable,
First run 160u = 0.4g
First run 120u = 0.8g
Second run 120u =0.7g
First run 90u = 1.6g
Second run 90u =1.5g
First run 73u = 1.7g
Second run 73u =1.9g
First run 45u = 1.2g
Second run 45u =1.5g

Grand total (-190u's) = 12.3g
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/baggedHash.jpg

You can probably tell by looking at the chopped wet hash patties, that the returns from mixes 1 & 2 are almost identical
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/AllChopped.jpg
In fact, I'm sure I could have run this material a third time, but that would fall outside the parameters of this particular experiment, so I will save it for a nice batch of canna-butter, and make some yummy space-cookies.

Have now sampled all grades :bong2: The quality of the 2 runs is suprisingly almost the same (almost). The 90u 73u and 45u all bubble a bit at first and then leave a little ash ( a very little less on first run hash), but no full melt here, so I didnt bother with the pipe shots. Still tasty potent hash, and I plan on enjoying every lil nerd of it....

I will be making batch #4 for this post in the next few days, the same amount of wet starting weight of Sister M buds, fresh frozen, for comparison.

Watch this space.......

Bump.

So I made batch #4 for this thread last night, both runs are looking pretty sticky, I will post the whole run after its dry, another 2-3 days.

I also decided that I might just use this 2 run experiment template on all strains I run, and add them to this thread as they occur. Keep your eyes on this space for some more melty hash pics to come soon...... :)

Ok, I spent a few hours today weighing out the hash (gettin better at not sampling too much :) ), taking final pictures, and editing all the pictures for the batch (think I actually got em all done before the post this time). The procedure is of course, the same as the previous batches, a short 6 minute mix followed by a longer 15 minute mix.

These buds have been in the deep freezer for more than 8 weeks

Managed to get the sticky stuff weighed this time.
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/BaggedHash_991445.jpg

As always the lesser grades go into my steadily growing cooking hash pile, being the first run 160u, and the second run 190u&160u

I made a nice mix (for the wife, and guests, not giving it away this time) of the first run 25u, and the second run 25u&120u = 0.4g

first 120u = 0.3g
first 90u = 1.1g
second 90u = 0.7g
first 73u = 0.8g
second 73u = 1.0g
first 45u = 0.7g
second 45u = 1.1g

So thats a total of 6.1g of smokeble hash, plus the cooking hash. (I am sure I could have run this material again, but I will save it for some cookies, gotta stick with the experiment parameters)

About 1/2 the yield of the dry Sister M buds (same starting weight of fresh bud). The hash from the dry bud runs is much drier granules, but the 73u still pressed into a nice pliable hash. The hash granules from the fresh bud runs are much stickier, with a waxy oily feeling to the touch....... the only pics of meltiness I took were the second run 90u from fresh bud....... (forgive the dirty bowl and old screen)

Lil BUMP.

Made some White Widow hash (from fresh material) for this post on Friday, got all the required shots. Let it dry till today without sampling it, weighed it all up and bagged it, and got a few more pics tonight. Too tired to do all the editing tonight though, I'll try to get it all together and posted tomorrow if I can. The companion batch of White Widow hash (from dry material) is soon to be made as well....

Keep your eyes on this space.....

Okey & the Dokey, I think I have it all together to post now.

My buddy gave me a kut of a White Widow pheno he grew out from seed, his first run on them was not so great, so we thought we'd see what I could do with it. I only did a 3 plant run as a test, so the material for the WW batches is limited to a wet weight of 103g each (batch #6 will be the same amount of the same material, dried). Here is a shot of 1 of the 3 at day 67, I took them down at day 71.
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/WWday67.jpg

And here is the 103g of fresh frozen (since Jan 28, in a deep freezer) WW smaller buds
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/WW-103g-Fresh.jpg
Big Thanks to my bro who lent me his new 8 bag set to help streamline this 2-run process
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/two-ready-buckets.jpg

Also thanks to my better half for helping with the photography, it made the job much quicker and easier than trying to do it all myself. :)

Set the timer for 6 minutes, the light foam after the short mix, and the foamy green water in the first run bucket. The hash water from this WW is always so green.

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/second-run-chopped.jpg

Time to let the hash dry, and keep the 'mice' out of it. From the first run its greenish thru the 120µ, and then the 25µ is green again, odd. Pretty much all of the second mix hash is some shade of green, and the water from both mixes was a cloudy lime green color.

YukonBikerGuy
03-25-2009, 10:26 PM
Here is the hash after 3 days of drying time, lots of it is so green I could barely test it, and went into the cooking hash pile, as you see in the second picture.
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/dry-3-days.jpg
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/piled.jpg

Weights are as follows:
The entire second run, plus the first run 190µ and 160µ = 1.1g (cooking pile)
First run 120µ = 0.2g
First run 90µ = 0.7g
First run 73µ = 1g
First run 45µ = 0.8g
First run 25µ = 0.2g

Total return of 4g

Smoke report to follow :)

120µ - Still a bit greenish, tastes a bit dusty, a very up high i felt behind my nasal pasages, for a short duration:

90µ - Very smooth light tasting smoke, got a good head rush at the end of the hit, felt the high in the top of my head, but was a bit too short in duration for my liking:

73µ - Very tasty, nice floral boquet in my mouth, gave me a full chest lock and cough with a full sweat as the hit settled in. My favorite of the lot:

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/73cMedium.jpg

45µ - very terpenous, caught fire like an Kuwaiti oil patch, a little less chest lock, burned longer than the other test hits, a forehead stone:

25µ - Hit started with a dry tickle in the nasal passages, and ended with a dry feeling in my throat, the high was light and short, this hash is pretty green in color and taste, my least favorite of the lot:

I'm new at the game of hash extraction, so my questions will be elementary for a while. My question is this, YBG.......these "second runs" you speak of, is this the same batch and you're just running it through the BN a second time? I've only tried it one time(last week), and I threw my mash away after one run thru the BN. Could I have run it thru a second time? Thanks for your help?

Yes, its the same mash mixed a second time. Some folks even run it a third time as well. Each run gets lower in both yield and quality.

Hope this helps,
YBG

Damn I'm a stoner of the greatest magnitude...... I just realized that I never posted the last batch that is supposed to be in this thread. I will dig around and see if I can't come up with the pics to post.

Lesson in Stoner Procrastination..... It's been so long that I have lost all the photos and detailed notes from that run, o well. Puff puff pass.

I just love it.

Cant wait to see what item you stick next to the BN timer for the next shots!!!!

Keep up the good work

this thread is eye opening and a great learning experience! thanks for the documentation, one question for you though.....what do I do with the leftover trim/buds...you mentioned making edibles....just add in the leftovers into some butter? do you prefer salted or unsalted...sorry for bombarding you with ?'s lol

Glad you enjoyed the thread. Start with basic canna-butter (found here: http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/2230.html , thx Cici and CC), you can always add salt later, but its hard to take it out, so I go with unsalted.

wow this is one hard core bubble thread. so cool to see the results from using all those buds. your quality looks top. this thread reminds me of Maximo's style. very interesting to see you systematic approach to every aspect including the hit, hehe. great work!

So you recommend freezing fresh trim for 2 weeks? Is that to max yield?

Good job and purdy results bro!

Might I ask how much ice you put in the bag with the frozen buds and how much in the washer?

Do you prechill the ice water mix before dropping the bag in?

Besides techniques, has anyone on this forum noted that one strain will produce a clear dome and another strain won't using the same process parameters?

I believe somewhere here on the forums there is a thread about full melt genetics. Yes it is true, some have a better chance of fm success than others. Peace GS

Wow, great process pics - thank you! This seems to confirm what I've been learning: if you can use fresh frozen trim, you're more likely to get full melt... and it seems like the shorter mix times result in a cleaner product (with very little reduction in yield).

So, short mix/fresh frozen bud will tend to produce the best result. Sound right?

Thank you for taking the time to share this experiment with everyone, peace.

I have made hash with both fresh trim and fresh bud. In my own experience and opinion, fresh frozen trim makes the very best bubblehash.

YBG I'm very curious as to why you stated that the trim needed to be frozen at least two weeks? Is it just for the parameters of this experiment to stay constant or does it really get "more frozen" the longer its in the freezer. Also I have a -40f freezer for work would it have any positive or negative effects on the trichomes? I'm worried about bursting them at such a low temperature.

I get -40C all the time in the winter, and my deep freezer is out on the deck. Go for it. There really isnt much if any water inside trich heads, and certainly not enough to cause them to burst (I think). You are more likely to rupture heads chopping up frozen wet hash patties than by freezing them. (Don't do that by the way.... I should know, lol)

I can only speculate as to the cause of the difference between just frozen and 2 week frozen material, but I do know that it makes for better hash. I think that being frozen for that period of time lets what little water content is in the trichome heads 'freeze dry' out, much like the ice crystals on a piece of meat that has been too long in the freezer. Dehydrated by being well frozen for a period of time.

I imagine that this would cause a few things, such as more of the water soluable terpenes getting trapped inside the waxy trich heads as they wont be as easy to leach out into the water during processing without the water as present in the waxy head to begin with. Also, with less water content inside the heads the would cause them to be even more subject to more of a difference in specific gravity than the water-laden trich heads would. It may also be that being hard frozen for that period of time affects the chlorophyl and other constituents of the plant matter in some way that affects the final outcome as well. For sure fresh material that is frozen has all the cells rupture as they freeze, which you would think would release more chlorophyl etc into the mix, but perhaps the plant material is also benifiting from the same freezer dyhydration in some way, removing moisture from the internals and locking in some of the chlorophyl etc to the inside of the plant material for the mixing process.

Again, all of this is complete supposition on my part. Just the possible actions and causes. All I can state with surety is that in my experience, the hash is always better if the starting material has been deep frozen for at least 2 weeks prior to proccessing, and that the effect is most noticeable on fresh frozen trim. Everybody is free to suggest thier own theories and/or poke holes in mine.

Thanks for looking,
YBG

Thank you very much for the informative reply. I will keep my material frozen for much longer now. I'm going to go do some research on freezing temperatures effect on chlorophyll now.
