LEIDEN, 28/02/08 - Researchers have set up the Netherlands Association for Legal Cannabis and its Substances as Medication (NCSM). NCSM wishes to improve and distribute scientific knowledge relating to medicinal uses of cannabis.
Doctors and pharmacists have a very unclear idea of the medicinal uses of cannabis, the founders explained. "They have many questions that are not covered during their training," said researcher Arno Hazekamp of Leiden University, who is the spokesman for the new foundation.
The executive committee includes a pharmacist, a biological scientist and a criminologist. Chairman of the Supervisory Board is Rob Verpoorte, professor of pharmacognosis at Leiden University.
The establishment of the NCSM was prompted by Health Minister Ab Klink's decision to give science and industry the freedom to market a registered medicine for a period of five years. As its first act, the foundation wishes to launch a website with all the knowledge that is currently available.
