I was lucky enough to be selected to try out some of Doc Atomic's Atomic NL seeds, so long as I could document the grow complete with (and maybe most importantly) as many photos as I can supply throughout the entire process, as well as notes on how it was done, and my comments and opinions as a grower and consumer.

So let us begin the journey, and I will do the best that I am able.

For starters, I will include a link to Doc Atomic's breeder page for the Atomic NL, which has some nice pics of the chunky lady's I am looking for in my own garden.
http://www.dratomicseedbank.com/atomicNL.html

Here we have a nice lil bag of healthy looking seeds (not in original packaging):

Got some moist paper towel ready to sprout them in:

Seeds are nestled in and the journey has begun:

(Yes, I am somewhat behind with the posting and whatnot, but I am a Stoner, and a Patient, with a garden to tend, so I do what I can, as I can)

Here are the seeds after approx 48 hours, almost all of them have at least cracked, with many protruding rootlets, and even some cotyledons (seed leaves) showing:

Thru this stage, I completely gapped on photos, sorry. I will do my best to give as complete a description as possible.

After approximately 60 hours, I selected the 28 healthiest of the sprouted seeds, and planted them in some of my soiless mix in red beercups, and put them into some domed trays, along with some clones for another project. The remaining seeds were discarded.

As they grew into little plantlets, I realised that my timing was a little off. The plants in the flower room were going to need a some more time to finish up. As a result, my 28 lil Atomic NL plantlets spent more time than intended in the florecent powered (21hrs a day) veg area, and almost all of them exeperienced a bit of 'seedling stretch', although there were 2-3 runtier ones that were probably glad for the extra time to develop before being moved to HID lighting.

Here are the 28 Atomic NL seedlings, moments after being transplanted from red beercups to 1 gallon nursery pots, and buried a little deeper to counteract the stretch. Each plant was individually numbered for later tracking. They really liked the move from florecent (21hrs per day) lighting to 1000W of MH (24hrs per day).

It is about a week or so later and the Atomic NL plants are comming along nicely, time to spread them out a bit (and add a few companion plants to the grow room as well). In addition to the 1000W MH, I added a 1000W HPS. Plants are still recieving 24 hrs a day of light, as they have been since being moved under HID lighting. Also recieved thier first (weak, ie %50 strength) feeding at this stage.

Most are comming along nicely:
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4081Medium.JPG

Some of the (runty) others are a little bit mutated:

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4085Medium.JPG

Besides those few, most are quite healthy and normal looking:

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4087Medium.JPG
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4088Medium.JPG

Here they are, spread out, and with the HPS added, and a few of the companion plants trying to horn in on the photo (I tried to tell them to get out of frame, but you know):
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4089Medium.JPG

(Please ignore any companion plants that you may occasionally see in this thread, as it is devoted entirely to the Atomic NL)

Here we are with the next installment, the plants are little over 2 weeks older than the last photos....

Now that they have been in the 1 gal nursery pots for a bit under the mixed light (1000W ea of MH & HPS) they are really putting on some major healthy growth, and the stems are getting thickened up nicely. The runts/mutants have also put on some growth and even started to normalize a little as well. On with the photos....

Here are a couple group shots of the Atomic NL in 1 gallon nursery pots:

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4097Medium.JPG

Now some individual close up shots:

a lil bit mutated but recovering

The side branches on this mutant wanted to be boss, but its recovering:

same with this 1:

As I transplanted them into 2gal nursery pots, I took a few shots of the roots, and before and after pictures:

So its been not quite a week since the transplant and last photos, took a few quick shots to note growth, root development, and some early sexing.

Note the visible pistilate hairs, a sure sign this is a female:

Less than a week since transplant and the roots are already pushing out the bottom:

Been about 10 days since the last set of photos. Plants are still recieving 18hrs/day of 1000W HPS & 1000WMH.

Keeping a close eye on the crop, and by now pretty much all of them are showing some sign of sex. (By letting them stay in that size pot a bit long, they get a tiny bit of root circling, which will encourage many plants to show a sign of sex) In some cases, particularly with males, it can be difficult for a begginer to judge sex by eye at such an early stage (still in vegetive lighting), but I have done it a few now, and do not second guess my determinations anymore. (You should be sure for yourself when sexing) Any sign of male-ness earns a quick death.

Picture format is (mostly) as follows:
Plant identification, whole plant, close up(s) of sex

I may have flaked on a few, but the sex of the plants have been marked, and are visible in the identification shots. Also some of the close up shots may be hard to make out, but I did the best I could without a macro lens.

Here are a couple group shots just before I sex them all:

Hope you have enjoyed the update.

So crippled today.... got a ton of work to do in the garden.... can't.

Instead I thoght I'd pen another update on the Atomic NL, since I'm nowhere near caught up on it, and.... I can.

It has been almost 2 weeks since the last quick set of photos, plants have been vegging away happily, turning into happy little bushes under 18hrs per day of 2 X 1000W HPS. In fact, so much growth has occured, its getting darn bushy in the lower canopy.

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4296Medium.JPG
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4297Medium.JPG

As I pruned these ladies, I retained multiple individually labled clones of each one, to become future moms if selected as a winner.

Picture format for this series is (generally) as follows:
Identification, close up of lower bushiness, bushy whole plant shot, and pruned whole plant shot

So this set of pics was taken about a week after the last set. Pre-flowers are forming all over the place, and the girls seem to be enjoying the airflow in the lower canopy.

Time for an update, around a week or so since the last set of pics, grabbed a few quick overall shots:

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4390Medium.JPG
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4391Medium.JPG

As I took these shots, I also did my regular examination of the plants with an eye out for abnormalities, problems, ect. Sure enough, a couple popped up with some odd characteristics.

#14 has been on the 'lil mutant' list for a while now, and I noticed some more mutations comming up:
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4392Medium.JPG
getting closer as we go......
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4393Medium.JPG
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4394Medium.JPG
what the heck is that down in the junction of the fan leaf stem and side branch stem?
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4395Medium.JPG
and a couple more...
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4396Medium.JPG
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4397Medium.JPG
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4398Medium.JPG

These odd growths are not on the upper or lower sections of the plant, just the middle section. To me these look like either the beginings of male sex parts, or possibly a mutation that is providing additional flowering sites, or both. In any case way it bears keeping an eye on.

#16 also has some some growths starting in the same locations, at the junction of the fan leaf stem and the branch proper, but on this plant they start in the middle and continue right to the top, where the growths appear to be forming additional flowering sites.

About 4-5 days after the last set. Took a couple of general overall shots just after the lights went out. A lot easier to see the true lush green color of the plants without the HPS lamps on.

#16 is still on the watch list... for now. I will let it develop a little further to see if it is just the extra flower site formation, or also confused about its sexual identity.

More later,

Not quite a week since the last set of photos.

Popped in just before lights came on, and snapped a few quick shots. Several of these girls are really starting PHatten up, and even the more leggy of the girls are developing nicely. Room smells strongly of baby puke & skunk cabbage.

Almost a week since the last photos, I popped in just before lights on to take these shots, in fact 1 HPS lamp came on while I was snapping the last few.

So they are starting to look nice, a lot of potential chunkyness comming on. The ladies are also starting to develp thier own scents, most varying away from the general 'baby vomit' aroma they all started with.

Still getting fed pretty steady. No abnormalities in the room. The environment is generally easier to control in the winter, though some abnormal weather this year has me riding the controls pretty hard.... once again starting to think of investing in a controller to do the work for me.

Later in this same day, I took a deeper look into mutant #16...... but ya gotta wait.... :)

Those photos, and conclusions from same, in the next instalment of YBG's Atomic NL test grow.

As promised....

This series of pictures was taken at the same time as the last set. After the overall shots I gave #16 its daily close up exam....

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4490Medium.JPG

From afar, it looks like many of the other plants in the room, ie: comming along nicely. At the top crown of the plant, the mutations previously noted before still seem to be producing an 'extra flower site' at the junction of the true branches and the fan leaf stems. Little buds are forming there. But from the bottom of the 'top crown', down through the lower branches, the mutation looks a lot more like definitive boy parts.

Certainly not one I want to continue in the garden any longer. Smells nice tho, and even sorta sticky already. Oh well.

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4505Medium.JPG
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4506Medium.JPG

As I cut it up, I could see upon even closer examination, that there were also male parts forming inside the flowers as well. Glad it was culled.

It is now well and truely dead. The clones retained from it were also destroyed. All in all, there were only 2 hermi plants in this batch of sprouted seeds, both which didnt show untill well into flowering. This ratio seems pretty normal to me, and not indicitive of any problem as such. They also showed later in the plant's life cycle, which is both less of a problem in terms of 'screwing up a crop', (ie not paying close enuff attention to your grow), and in addition, problem seed batches will tend to have a much higher incidence rate and show hermaphrodism much more rampantly and much earlier in the grow cycle (even whilst vegging in some cases). Sometimes using artificial foods and additives can also cause these later type hermi's in an indoor garden.

In short, I do not consider this a problem, and well within acceptable losses for a seed crop (along with the male plants).

**On a side note, Mr. Cripple is in full effect, so pictures are not current as I post them, but some time in the not too recent past.**

Hope you enjoyed the update, more later.

Wow, am I ever falling behind. Most of the pictures for this project are in the can, I just need to sort, write and post it all up. Maybe I can get caught up by the time the actual smoke testing begins.

In any case, on with the update. It has been 3 or 4 days since the last set of pictures. General format for this series of pictures is plant identification shot, a whole plant shot, and 1 or more closeups of the top cola/buds. More or less... stoner, yanno...

At this point, the plants have been under 12/12 for approx 5 weeks. Still recieving food. The baby puke smell has left most of them, and they are each developing unique odors. They all appear to be healthy as heck and starting to really devlop the flowers now. The next few weeks should see the plants double or more in weight.

Hope you enjoyed the update,

Very nice! I've enjoyed growing out a Female Seeds cut of NL, and this one has been on my list to try as a result. This is encouraging, can't wait to see your harvest and smoke report. Gonna be a lot of hard work to test them all and choose the keeper!

So its been a rough time for Mr Cripple this winter, and nearly 2 weeks have elapsed since the last set of pictures. I have done the bare minimum to keep the garden healthy and running for this time, but that didn't include as many pictures as I'd have liked. Oh well.

First off I took some general shots, of the lower and upper canopy:

At this point, I realised that so much development had gone on since the last picture set, that I should try for a few (quick) individual shots as well:

Getting nicely chunky, and most have lost the baby puke smell, as other more aromatic scents emerge. No more food for the crop now (almost 7 weeks flowering, carbo-loading the last week). They will be completley flushed twice and given only pure water to drink from this point on.

Thats all for this update, more to come.

Ya man, #11 smells a bit fuel-ish.... not quite a diesel, or fuel oil smell, but definately a strong hydrocarbon. Makin a ton of frost, and may be worth some further investigation.

Okee & the Dokee as well....

Has been 10 or 11 days since the last set of photos. Just some overall shots. Plants are starting to really thicken up, and some are also starting to get colorful. The earlier finishing phenotypes are starting to look near ready. Many leaves are showing nitrogen deficiency and starting to yellow and/or die.

Looking across the canopy at the various plants, several look like they would be happy with some nutrient fiddling if selected as mother stock. A little more on some, a little less on a few others, modified micronutrients on a few more. Pretty typical for a seed crop. I just fed them (and the companion plants) my '3/4 strength' program that works well for my usual runs, and let it fall where it may, rather than trying to micro manage each plant. It does give a general idea of the nuterient requirements for the individual plants however, to keep in mind for those that may be selected.

Getting closer and closer to chop time.....

Realised that the last set of pics were pretty yellow, and not very true to the plant's colors. So the next morning before lights on, I popped in again for another few quick overall shots. The colors and also the foxtailing exploding buds are much easier seen.

Just past 9 weeks of flowering, time to cut and trim these ladies. This is a couple day, multi step process for me(@ the best of times), so photographing it and keeping it all in order was quite a challenge. It has taken several hours just to sort, edit, resize, and add the pictures to my gallery in correct order for just this 1 post. All in all, I think I only missed taking 1 photo in this series, not too bad.

General format for this series is: ID shot, whole plant with leaves on, bud shot(s) with leaves, whole plant without leaves, bud shot(s) without leaves, and then a shot of that plant's trimmed bud hung/ready to hang, and then any comments I have on that plant.

In no particular order.......

Uh oh. Male bannanas.... and ripe seed as well in this 1. Which means that at week 4-5, when 2 other hermaphrodites in the garden were destroyed, bannanas inside this plant's female bud released pollen, and had long enough for ripened seeds to develop in the remaining weeks. The entire plant has not gone to seed, but it appears as if most of the major buds have a seed or 2 in them from self seeding. Definatley not going to be kept as a mother.

This plant was not the biggest at harvest time but may have benifitted from longer feeding/flowering times. Very interesting specimen. Most of the leaves had frost on them, and the inner leaves are pretty much coated. Bet this would be a good 1 for bubblehash off the trim. It has an interesting smell about it, slight hydrocarbon, like diesel or fuel oil, but not quite, fuel-ish for sure. Looking forward to the smoke test.

Well, the first few plants worth of buds are ready for some testing, so away we go. (the frowns on markers just mean I wont be selecting that particular plant for a mother)

Format is: A few shots, then comments, and weight per plant (not including popcorn nuggets or trim)

In no particular order....

This 1 had some loose seeds rolling around in the bottom of the jar, and I thought the test joint bud was seed free, but about 1/2 way through I had a lil popcorn popper in there. The buds smell woodsy even when broken up, the first toke was so peppery it made me sneeze violently. Burned clean with a nice light grey ash, had an average taste and and an ok medium stoney buzz. This plant yielded 68.5g

This jar smelled like stale fruity candy stuck into a cheeseburger, with a slight hint of mint. Sounds a bit wierd, but the overall effect is actually pleasant. Buds are fairly sticky with a few loose seeds in the bottom of the jar. First toke was a bit fruity, and then slightly of pepper, but not to a sneeze. Buzz was fairly clear headed, maybe even a bit light for my taste. This plant yielded 70g.

This specimen smelled a little woodsy, till slightly crushed, and then gave off a very strong minty scent, almost tingling in the nostrils with a very light bit of a fruit undertone that increased as it was ground up. The nuggets had a nice density to them, the smoke was very smooth, we finished the joint before we knew it. Buzz was sort of creeperish, and increased over time, stoney. This plant yielded 66g.

As I unpacked this jar, there were a few male flowers on the bottom of the jar. The nuggets are very dense, with LOTS of crystals all over their entirety. The way it looked up close and felt very sandy between my fingers reminded me of the feel of batch of nice Champagne I had several years back; it also felt like rubbing sand between your fingers... If it weren't for the nanners, I'd think about keeping this 1 as a dry sifter, just handling it a little leaves a lot of dry sift on the work surface. Smoke was very smooth, and gave a medium stoney buzz. This plant yielded 86.6g

Thats all the testing for now, more to come. Keep your eye on this space.

Here we go with the next batch of plants to be smoke tested, in no particular order:

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4839Medium.JPG
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4840Medium.JPG

Smells a bit of tanned leather, with a minty undertone. Smells lighter as its broken up, a little Hazey even, like an Amsterdam coffeeshop. Tastes a bit of burnt kiwi, with a pill-ish aftertaste. A nice smooth stoney high. This plant yielded 81.1g

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4842Medium.JPG
http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4843Medium.JPG

Nugs were light and airy, smells a bit woodsy then like maple syrup on an eggo and a very very slight hint of mint. Smells more hazey as broken up. Ash is a nice light grey color, but the smoke is acrid and harsh. Didn't finish the joint, it wasnt very pleasant. Not too much to note on the effect either. This plant yielded 47g

http://www.fullmeltbubble.com/gallery/files/5/1/6/IMG_4846Medium.JPG

Oh no! I thought this 1 was clear, but I found a few seeds in the bottom of the curing jar. Nice dense nugs, starts out smelling earthy and a tiny bit menthol, then a bit more of a mellow apple scent as its broken up. Super smooth smoke, with a tasty hint of appleish-ness, like apple pipe tobbacco scent but not as strong. Nice mellow high. This plant yielded 80.5g

Arg! Several very ripe seeds in the bottom of this jar, I thought it was also clear :( . Buds have a lighter green scent than most of the others, crushing the bud a little releases a lightly minty lemonish scent, which becomes a bit more Hazey as its broken up. Average smoke, very smooth with a very small fruity aftertaste. A nice bit of a creeper high I noticed settling in after a few minutes on this 1. This plant yielded 59g

Nice dense nuggets, smell is earthy, and like old candy, they are very shiny with trichomes. Bit of a citrus smell as its broken up, very appealing, I kept sticking my nose back in the grinder. Yummy smelling. Medium smooth smoke, tastes faintly of cotton candy. Strong effect initially, as well as a nice creeper effect that came on a bit later. This is certainly my favorite so far. This plant yielded 79.8g

Damn... after a few hrs of testing and several joints it starts to become hard to maintain the same objectivity... hell, I needed a few hours to get it together to post the pics and stuff, lol. Whee! A bit dissapointed to find a couple more self seeded ladies (not gonna be moms for my garden), but also happy to find to find some interesting flavors comming out in the different plants. I have more jars/plants to smoke test yet, so keep your eye on this space.

Hope you all are enjoying the thread.

This is the last group of testing, on this Atomic NL test grow.

In no particular order:

This plant is sporting some nice medium density nugs. Smells a bit Hazey, buds are very sparkly with trichomes. It has a bit lighter scent when ground up, fresh and spicy, with a hint of running shoe (not in a gross way). The buds look like they would have liked a longer time on food, & flush, and overall finishing. The smoke was medium bodied, with a quick initial head high... then I feel stoney, and it builds. I think the high also speaks to this pheno needing more time to properly finish. This plant is interesting, and will be getting another run in my garden for sure, cloned. This plant yielded 46.4g

The curing jar smells like stale candy, very dense nugs, crushing them a little releases and amazing spicy yummy scent. Broken up it smells like a spicy coffee cake, with a nose tingly cannabis tinge. I couldn't keep my nose out of the grinder, or the pile of ground herb. Drawing air thru the unlit joint tastes like coffee cake with stale candy in it. Lit, the smoke is very smooth and easy on the throat with and almost soapy tasting, like spicey incense or perfume. The high was average and well rounded. This was a very enjoyable test overall, start to finish. This plant yielded 55.8g

One loose seed in the jar. Buds smell earthy, crushing them slightly smells a little spicy/minty. Smells like a lightly minty coffeecake when broken up. The smoke was light and smooth, a lil peppery, with a tobbaco-ish aftertaste. Made my lips sticky smoking it. High was clear and light. This plant yielded 65.9g.

Nice earthy smelling buds, slightly crushed smells of some wierd light scented diesel-fruit. Ground up the scent is more of a fuelish pine. Good density to the buds. Has an average smoke and flavor, a light high that comes on slowly. This plant yielded 81.1g

As always, any tags with a sad face will not be slected to continue in my garden. Some of the others will get another shot at a production run (6 - 12 plants) from the retained genetics, but I haven't made final selections yet. Hoping to post those future runs here, whenever I may get to them.

I also have a batch of hash to make from the mixed trim off of these, which I also hope to post here.

Hope you all have enjoyed following my lil Atomic NL test grow.

Nice report man! very detailed and lots of pics. Those look like some really good yields, can you compare the yield of the Atomic NL to your average yield per plant with your setup? I've been looking into the Doc's NL for a while and I like your results. The hermies are kinda discouraging though.

Most of my regulars get to the 70-80g each range, but the plants aren't as big as the Atomic NL's were ending up. But thats usually how it goes with a seed grow for me, I let them get a bit bigger than I might with cloned stock, just to ensure a sturdy healthy plant thru the flower phase.

The plants that showed hermie traits didnt go so crazy as to wreck the whole roomfull, and didnt really hurt the yield at all. I just wouldnt select one of those for a mom is all. They smoke just fine in the end.
