Australian farmers to be given the green light to grow hemp

Farmers in New South Wales could soon be given the green light to grow hemp.

The state's first legal hemp crop has been approved by police and will contain only small amounts of the chemical in marijuana.

The backflip goes against the government�s decade long stance to introduce new laws allowing farmers to grow hemp for its oil and fibres.

The first legal farm that's been granted permission by police will begin growing cannabis later this year in the hopes it will pave the way for a new hemp industry in Australia.

NSW Primary Industries minister Ian Macdonald says hemp can be used to make a number of useful goods.

�It can be used for textiles, building products, especially in masonry for buildings, insulation, durable yarn, paper products.�

This is great news, not for the outdoor guys so much but with all the drought they have been having, hopefully they can be generating more income. I wonder if it would be a good idea to plant a geruilla plot of Sativas in a fibre production field...

Hemp is more friendly to water resources. That's for sure. I'm not sure about planting good stuff around hemp. I'd be afraid of cross-pollination (seedy buds).

I thoguht in fibre production that you cut before they seed as you get more fibre production and you can buy seed that are just female for hemp, or so I've read, sorry I don't have the references, anyone help out?

Hemp seed is valuable in many ways.

I believe you can farm for seeds, fibre or seeds and fibre.
